Emergency management - all you need to know.
An emergency situation can arise at any time, usually when we’re least expecting it. Being involved in or seeing an accident on the road can be very stressful and scary. Knowing what to do in this situation can not only reduce panic, but can also help you deal with the situation better. Knowing what to do could help save yours or someone else’s life.
What is emergency management?
Emergency planning management refers to the coordination and management of resources and responsibilities pertaining to the mitigation of, preparedness for, response to, and recovery from an emergency. Emergency planning is the action that companies take to minimise the effects of a crisis or incident. It helps reduce the chance of injuries, while protecting the community. Having a set of clear roles, responsibilities, instructions, and procedures will help ensure people are kept safe during the event of a crisis.
What to do after a road accident?
Road accidents can be very frightening and dangerous, even if you weren't involved in the accident. Paramedics are specifically trained to deal with these kinds of situations and treat injured people. But here is what to do if you’re the first person to come across this situation:
- If you are driving, pull over and park your vehicle in a safe place off the road, put on your hazards, and turn off your headlights. Try to park your vehicle back from the accident so that other vehicles can see the accident.
- If you have any warning triangles, put them out.
- Call 999 and give them your location, your name and number and the details (as far as you’re away) of what happened.
- If you have a First Aid Kit, take it out and put on the rubber gloves inside the kit.
- Try and calm the people that have been involved in the accident.
- If there is a fire and you have a fire extinguisher, use it and direct the foam at the base of the flames.
How to treat the injured after an accident?
Do not try and play the hero when you’ve been in an accident. Your safety should be the most important thing. Do not try and jeopardise your own safety by trying to help anyone else. Do not move anyone injured because you could potentially be doing them more harm than good. The only exception to this is if there is an immediate threat to their life.
- If someone is unconscious, open their mouth and check there is nothing causing obstruction.
- Check that they are breathing.
- Begin CPR and rescue breathing if they aren’t breathing (ONLY if you are trained to do so).
- If anyone is bleeding heavily, take any available material, place it over the wound with pressure (e.g. a towel, piece of clothing etc.). Ensure you keep the pressure and do not remove the material until the emergency services arrive.
